Out of all the home remodeling projects, the bathroom remodel is one of the most sought-after projects homeowners partake in. And it’s no wonder why when bathroom remodels can practically pay for themselves with an approximate 60% ROI. Many homeowners find themselves falling out of love with their bathrooms, especially as design and style trends change over time. The only thing that holds homeowners back is the cost. Bathroom remodeling costs have changed over time, so let’s break down their cost in 2022.

Calculating Bathroom Remodeling Costs

Before looking at the average bathroom remodeling costs, it’s important to take into account that bathroom remodeling is difficult to calculate. There are many factors to consider when calculating how much the average bathroom remodel will cost, such as what materials will cost based on their varying degrees of quality. For instance, some remodels will feature a simple shower head, but another might feature a shower head that costs thousands of dollars.

With that out of the way, let’s look at the average and ranges of bathroom remodeling costs

  • Average Cost: $5,500
  • Average Range: $2,000-$18,000

Bathroom Remodeling Costs by Type

Bathroom Remodel

Homeowners who decide to remodel their bathrooms tend to remodel certain aspects of their bathrooms. Some remodel a half-bath while others do a full-scale remodel to make their bathroom into a luxury one. The average cost by square footage is $100 to $200. Below is a list of bathroom remodeling projects:

  • Half-bath remodel
  • Full bath remodel
  • Primary bath remodel
  • Wet room installation
  • Luxury bath remodel

The luxury bathroom remodel costs the most out of all at $50,000, while half-bath remodels remain the least expensive bathroom remodeling project at $2,000 to $5,000.

Bathroom Remodeling Costs by Item

Regardless of what type of remodeling you’re embarking on, other factors contribute to the bathroom remodeling costs. These include what aspects of the bathroom you’re updating, such as shower, toilet, backsplash, flooring, and much more. The most expensive parts of a bathroom to chop and change include the wet area, vanity and countertops, and tiling.

Wet Area

This might be a relatively nuanced term, but the wet area applies to the parts of the bathroom that gets wet and is waterproof, such as the bathtub and shower. This part of the bathroom tends to be the most expensive. A bathtub can cost $600 or $5,000, depending on the type of tub you’re looking for. As for showers, prefab units that can be installed as a DIY are about $525, but custom showers can cost as much as $10,000, including tiling, plumbing, and more.

Cabinetry and Countertops

Cabinetry and countertops also have various customization options that make them fun to pick. Cabinetry has the benefit of being a part of the bathroom remodeling process that costs less than anything else if you decide to refinish your cabinets, restain, paint, or replace the doors and hardware. If you want to replace the cabinets entirely or add more, there are a couple of options. Ready-to-assemble fiberboard cabinets can be installed by yourself and cost about $50 to $200 per unit, but they won’t have the longevity that solid and hardwood does. More durable options will be more expensive, with double vanity options costing about $2,000.

Countertops, on the other hand, are not as DIY as cabinetry can be. Luckily, bathroom countertops don’t require as much durability as kitchen countertops. The least expensive options available for countertops include laminate, tile, and sealed wood. The downside, however, is that they are more difficult to clean and are easier to damage. The more expensive options are granite, marble, and quartz, which are more durable and simple to clean. They must be properly sealed and can display stains if not cleaned properly.

Faucets and Plumbing

Aside from cosmetics, relocating plumbing is the most expensive bathroom remodeling cost that can add up quickly. This occurs when you want to change the layout of your bathroom and the location of showers, tubs, and toilets. Plumbers will be required; their services can run from $75 to $100 per hour.

The cost will likely be a few hundred dollars to replace sinks, tub faucets, handles, and shower heads. There are many options available for faucet replacements. This part of the process is likely one of the least expensive. Zinc, stainless steel, brass, and chrome are some of the available options.

Flooring

The number of options available to homeowners for bathroom flooring is extensive. Vinyl and laminate flooring is less expensive than natural stone and hardwood flooring and can mimic it. Tile flooring made of ceramic and porcelain is another inexpensive option, though they require more work due to the grout needed to place them. The size of the space will dictate the final price. The larger the bathroom, the higher the material and labor costs.

Toilet

Thankfully, toilets are one part of the project you can opt-out of replacing. Most homeowners decide to save money this way. However, if you’ve had the same toilet for many years, you may decide it’s time to upgrade. A new toilet costs about $600 for the toilet and installation, but some people can find bargains on a new toilet. Keep an eye out for sales when it comes to replacing your toilet.

Other

Aside from the other items listed above, there are still many other factors to consider that contribute to the overall bathroom remodeling costs in 2022. Here are a few more:

  • Ventilation
  • Lighting
  • Shower door/curtains
  • Hardware
  • Mirrors
  • Waterproof wall surrounds for tub/shower
